Physician Heal Thyself

Physician Heal Thyself

Health and well-being is something I have been interested in for a long time.  However, not by pumping man-made drugs into my body.  I am stubborn enough to believe that God made this body to function and heal itself given the correct circumstances.

Don’t get me wrong there are situations where medicine is helpful mostly I just have chosen a different route.  I believe most things that could be wrong with me are correctable by changing the way I live.  I believe in more alternative types of healthcare and my primary care physician is a chiropractor.  I have found relief from chronic headaches that other physicians could not help with (other than pushing drugs that can harm other organs.)

This is by no means meant to be a guide for anyone else but merely a route that I have chosen for myself.

I have other issues with my health as well.  After many years of not stepping on a scale I decided to (I can’t remember why unfortunately).  I was just two pounds shy of 300 pounds.  I was shocked and dismayed.  I had several times altered my diet to a more “whole food” diet because of allergies, however you can eat “whole foods” and still gain weight if you eat the wrong ones in the wrong combinations.

A year prior to stepping on the scale I had had severe skin rashes which I am convinced was because of the job at a recycling place- we had lots of dust (which usually has some molds mixed in) and metal dusts.  If felt like I was being stabbed repeatedly all over with pins and my face and eyes were swollen with rashes everywhere.  My eyes burned and itched.  I went several times to the eye doctor who gave me steroid drops which helped, but I knew that it was not a long term solutions.  I finally saw an allergist and found out yeast, molds, dust, etc. were on my list of allergens.  The yeast was the most inflamed and itchy skin patch.  I started on their prescribed drops but they didn’t really talk about other ways to deal with these allergies.  I began researching, taking probiotics, neti-potting for sinus issues, and started doing eyewashes with Dr. Christopher’s Herbal Eyebright.  I also changed jobs.  I found out that sugars and starches feed yeast in your body and began to change my diet.  At some point in this change is where I stepped on the scale.  It has been about three years and I am slowly taking control of my diet and health.  I am down about 40 pound by changing to not eating as many breads, pastas, etc. and increasing my vegetable intake.  I do have chronic pain everywhere that my chiropractor said was most likely fibromyalgia.  Recently my mother was diagnosed with MS and had many similar symptoms as I do.  She tells me that it can be familial and that I should get tested to get on the medicine.  (But remember I am stubborn and don’t really want to pump meds into my body).  I have weaned myself off of all ibuprofen (except for a very rare time).  And I used to take it several times a day.  In researching MS for my Mom I ran across the Wahl Protocol and found the diet that reversed symptoms to resonate with me.  I am working to amp up the vegetable intake and increase the exercise to improve my quality of life.  I have many struggle with food so eating “clean” is tough for me.  When sweets and junk food are around it is tough to avoid them.  Thankfully  my husband has been a big encourager.  He wants to see me succeed I realize that nearly every health issue I could have can be rectified by concentrating on eating the least processed foods the closest to the way God created them.  “All things are permissible but not all things are beneficial”.  This is a journey that I am on and I am inviting you to join me as we heal ourselves.

I have found that when sugar is cut completely out of my diet everything about my body feels better-the longer the better. Fasting is also a great tool to “reset” both my body and soul and I try to do it once a week. Doctor’s visits are an extremely rare occurrence for my children or me as we try to take a more natural approach to health care. My husband does take at least a dozen prescriptions daily for a serious disease so I also see the value of modern medicine. Hopefully we all can healthfully balance the line between modern medicine and taking care of our bodies naturally through a good diet, plenty of exercise and medical intervention as necessary!
