The weather has been swinging so much from warm one day and snowing the next. I was beginning to worry about my plants.
The warm days the buds started coming out and then we got this:
One of the upsides of feeding the birds right out in front of the office window is not only the different birds we get to see but all the other critters that are hungry and hang out.
They provide great entertainment for us. The squirrels are braver and come out in the middle of the day.
Their antics are hilarious. At one point we had 5 of them running and playing with each other. Read More
Yesterday the snow was coming down and the wind was howling when I looked out my window and saw a frenzy of bird activity. Purple finches, nuthatches, chickadees and sparrows sharing the food on the hanging feeder and on the ground.
Last week we went to four different Christmas concerts. One at church and three school ones. I loved the variety of music we heard and the enthusiasm of the children. We saw the nativity acted out, a play about Frosty the snowman, and lots of different holiday songs ranging from traditional to newer. It puts me in such a great Christmas mood, despite the lack of snow. Read More
In November we had nine inches of snow! Now we have none. 🙁 Green grass growing. I am hoping we don’t have to pull out the mower again.
As I was walking many times this fall I saw woolly bear caterpillars and most of them had rather long brown sections. Now I knew people had used them to forecast the winter but I couldn’t remember which way it was. So I looked it up on the internet and found that the longer brown section was said to mean a mild winter. Read More
As my mother has downsized I have been so grateful to be the recipient of some of the vintage Christmas decorations and ornaments from my youth in the 60’s. I have such fond memories of Christmas thanks to my mother who loves Christmas too. Christmas music going on 24/7. Singing Christmas carols on the long car rides to grandparent’s houses. Christmas programs in church (where my mother was also my Sunday school teacher). We could always expect a bag at the end of the program with peanuts, fruit and popcorn. Some of my fondest memories were of decorating the tree with my mom. Hanging the old ornaments, some of which grace my tree. Read More
The question was posed on the Today Show this morning real or fake? For my big tree it has to be real. Every year I look at artificial trees in the store and think, “that would be easier and maybe cheaper in the long run.” But I just can’t do it. I love the smell of the tree, I love the natural look and I even love the shelter it gives the critters outside after Christmas. I am supporting a local farmer by buying there trees and they will decompose in short order (or burn in our outdoor fire pit). Artificial trees don’t really decompose, have iffy health consequences (especially to those who are chemically sensitive), some apparently have lead in them. Nope, just can’t do it! Read More
I think the living room has now become my favorite room. For one it is bathed in sunlight from the south and east windows which is my favorite side of any house. When we purchased the house it was beige like the dining room and was the next room on my agenda to paint.
Before winter comes I like to trim back some of the annual and perennials in my front flower garden to make it look a bit more tidy. I leave some leaves as mulch for the plants and some seed heads for the birds to munch on. Last week I had some birds perch on my porch posts and scold me while I was inside having devotions. I guess they wanted food. So we put a bit out on the ground for them. Read More
